turn.

My husband took the mallets and gently banged the blue metal drum. Jolene looked up and said, "Is it my turn now?" He laughed. "It's always your turn." We were outside in the hot June sunshine, enjoying the open green spaces of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in western Massachusetts. The baby was peaceful in the stroller, and Jolene was enjoying making music with her drummer dad. I had just returned from the bookstore, having spent nearly $100 on authors and illustrators I'd fallen in love with that day as we wandered through the current exhibition, Picture the Dream: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement Through Children's Books . We hadn't known this was the exhibit when we purchased our advance tickets; it was a welcome surprise to see Jolene readily recognize figures from the books we have at home, and I wanted to buy every single painting of children by Ashley Bryan and Kadir Nelson.
